Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 62mm ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 62mm ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter | Four stops less light for controlled exposure
On a bright day, a river can look frozen in a photograph even when you want its movement to show. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 62mm ND 1.2 filter reduces the light reaching the camera, giving you room to use a slower shutter speed without simply overexposing the image. Its ND 1.2 rating corresponds to a four-stop reduction, making it suited to photographers who want to explore motion blur or use a wider aperture in bright conditions. The 62mm size is the key detail when matching it to your equipment: it’s intended for a lens that takes a 62mm filter. This is a fixed-strength neutral-density filter, so its role is clear and specific: reduce the incoming light by four stops, rather than let you vary the density as you shoot.
What four stops can do
A four-stop reduction cuts the light by a factor of 16. For example, if your exposure calls for 1/30 sec without the filter, the same aperture and ISO would call for about 1/2 sec with it. That longer exposure can give moving water a softer, blurred appearance. It’s also a straightforward way to try longer shutter speeds in daylight; adjust your exposure to account for the filter, then judge the result on your camera.
Specialist Note
The 62mm size is a practical starting point: match that filter size to your lens, and you’ll know whether this is the right fit for your setup. I’d consider this Firecrest when you want a deliberate four-stop reduction for a specific exposure effect, rather than a filter whose strength changes as you turn it. For a river scene, meter the shot and try a shutter speed around 1/2 sec to bring out water movement, adjusting aperture or ISO as needed. It also suits bright scenes where you want a wider aperture. The honest limitation is that four stops is a set amount, so it may not be enough when you’re aiming for very long daylight exposures.
