Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 62mm ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 62mm ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter | Five stops less light for longer exposures
The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 62mm ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter reduces incoming light by five stops, giving you more room to use a longer shutter speed or a wider aperture in bright conditions. It’s for photographers who want to control exposure with a fixed-strength neutral-density filter, rather than changing the light in post-processing. A five-stop reduction can make a practical difference when you want movement in a scene to blur, or when bright daylight would otherwise prevent the shutter speed you want. The 62mm size is relevant when choosing a filter for a lens with a matching filter thread. This is a straightforward, specific tool: its strength is the five-stop reduction, not adjustable density. If that reduction suits the scene and your lens, it gives you a clear starting point for exposure decisions.
Putting five stops to work
As a simple exposure example, a shutter speed of 1/30 sec becomes roughly one second when you keep the same aperture and ISO and add five stops of filtration. That gives moving water or passing clouds time to soften in the frame. The exact exposure you choose still depends on the light and the effect you want; use the camera’s meter or review the result and adjust from there.
Specialist Note
At five stops down, you can move from a quick exposure to a noticeably longer one without changing the scene’s lighting. I’d suggest this filter to someone who wants motion blur in a stream or wants to hold a wider aperture in bright daylight. For example, if your unfiltered reading is 1/30 sec, the ND 1.5 reduction brings you to about one second at the same aperture and ISO—a useful starting point for soft water. The 62mm size makes matching the filter to a lens’s filter thread essential. One honest limitation: this is a fixed five-stop filter, so it won’t let you fine-tune the strength mid-shot.
