Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 95mm ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 95mm ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter | Longer exposures in bright light
Without an ND filter, a bright scene can force you to use a faster shutter speed than you want. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 95mm ND 1.2 filter reduces the light reaching the camera, giving you more room to choose a slower exposure or a wider aperture. That makes it useful for photographers who want movement in water or clouds to blur, or who want to keep a wider aperture in bright conditions. Its four-stop reduction is a measured amount rather than an extreme cut: a practical fit for gaining creative control without pushing every exposure into very long-shutter territory. For water, for example, you can meter the scene first, then use the filter to slow the shutter and soften the movement. It’s a specialist tool for shaping exposure, not a replacement for choosing the shutter speed and aperture that suit the picture.
Specialist Note
This isn’t a filter for turning a sunny afternoon into a very long exposure; four stops gives you a useful, moderate reduction, not an enormous one. That’s why I’d point it out to someone who wants control without going to an especially strong ND. The ND 1.2 rating corresponds to four stops, so a metered 1/125 second exposure can become roughly 1/8 second at the same aperture and ISO—enough to give moving water a softer look. The 95mm size is the key fit detail: make sure your lens takes a 95mm filter. It suits landscape work where that balance of exposure control and usable shutter speed is what you need.
