Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 95mm ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 95mm ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter | Five stops for longer exposures
What sets this Firecrest apart is its clearly defined light reduction: ND 1.5, equivalent to five stops. That gives you room to use a slower shutter speed while keeping your chosen aperture and ISO, which is useful when you want movement to show in the picture. Landscape photographers can use it to soften flowing water; it also suits anyone working with a 95mm filter size who wants more control over exposure in bright conditions. The appeal is straightforward: you know how much light the filter cuts, so it’s easier to plan an exposure rather than relying on guesswork. This is a specialised filter for controlling light, not a general-purpose effect filter. Its value is in that measured reduction and the creative shutter-speed options it opens up.
Putting the light reduction to work
For a simple exposure calculation, suppose your scene meters at 1/30 sec. Keeping aperture and ISO the same, five stops of reduction lets you extend the shutter time to about one second and maintain the exposure. That can turn moving water into a softer blur while the rest of the scene stays properly exposed. The exact result depends on the light and your starting exposure, so use your meter or review the image as you work.
Specialist Note
Five stops means you can make a shutter exposure 32 times longer without changing aperture or ISO, which is a meaningful shift rather than a subtle adjustment. The 95mm size is the detail to match to your filter setup; it’s intended for photographers who need that size, not a universal fit. I’d consider it for a waterfall or a stream: meter the scene, keep your aperture and ISO fixed, then lengthen the shutter until the water’s movement becomes a smooth blur. It can also help with moving clouds over a landscape. One honest limit: five stops won’t automatically give you a multi-minute exposure in every daylight scene.
