Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 95mm ND 1.8 (6stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 95mm ND 1.8 (6stops) Filter | More time for creative exposures
This Firecrest is a fixed-density ND filter for photographers who want to control exposure without changing their framing. It suits landscape work, flowing water and other scenes where a longer shutter speed can give movement a softer appearance. It can also help when you want to use a wider aperture in bright conditions, while keeping the same framing. The appeal here is a clearly defined, substantial light reduction rather than an adjustable range: you choose the exposure effect you want, then set your camera around it. That makes it especially useful when you have a specific result in mind, such as showing motion in a stream or balancing a bright scene with a slower shutter. If you prefer to make small, continuous changes to filter strength, a fixed-density filter calls for a different approach.
Specialist Note
95mm is the size to plan around when deciding how this filter fits into your filter setup; don’t assume an arrangement for a smaller filter will accommodate it. Its ND 1.8 rating means a six-stop reduction, which gives you a useful amount of room to lengthen an exposure. For example, a metered 1/60 sec can become about one second at the same aperture and ISO. That’s a practical starting point for softening moving water: meter the scene, apply the six-stop change, then adjust your shutter speed for the look you want. It also suits bright scenes where you want a wider aperture. The honest trade-off is that this is a fixed strength, not an adjustable one.
