Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 95mm ND 2.1 (7stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 95mm ND 2.1 (7stops) Filter | Longer exposures for controlled motion
To soften a river into a continuous sheet or let clouds drift across a fixed landscape, you need to hold the shutter open longer than daylight normally allows. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 95mm ND 2.1 (7stops) Filter cuts the light reaching the camera, giving you room to build that motion into the exposure without changing the scene itself. It suits landscape and architectural photographers who want movement in water or sky while keeping the framing still; it can also help when you want a wider aperture in bright conditions. Its strength is deliberate exposure control, not adding detail or changing perspective, so your result still depends on the scene and your chosen shutter speed. Think through the composition first, then meter and adjust exposure for the effect you want. For flowing water, that means choosing a shutter time that turns individual ripples into a softer trace rather than expecting the filter to decide the look for you.
Specialist Note
The 95mm size is the practical detail to plan around: it makes your existing filter arrangement the first thing to consider. With ND 2.1, the seven-stop reduction lets you turn a filter-free 1/8 sec reading into roughly 16 sec at the same aperture and ISO, a useful starting point for smoothing a stream. It suits landscape photographers after controlled blur; keep an eye on moving leaves, which will blur too. I’d meter first and adjust from there, because this filter gives you exposure time, not a preset look.
