Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 95mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 95mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter | Extend exposure time in bright light
Bright light can leave you with shutter speeds too fast for the flowing-water or motion-blur effect you want. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 95mm ND 2.4 filter reduces the light reaching your camera by eight stops, giving you room to use a longer exposure in daylight. That makes it useful for smoothing moving water or showing movement in a busy scene, and it can also help you keep a wider aperture when the light is strong. The ND 2.4 rating describes the filter’s density; the eight-stop figure tells you the exposure reduction in practical terms. It’s a specialist tool for photographers who want deliberate control over shutter speed or aperture, rather than a filter to leave on for every situation. Choose it when the available light is getting in the way of the effect you have in mind.
Specialist Note
Does this Firecrest ND 2.4 give you enough reduction for daylight long exposures? Yes: its eight-stop cut can turn 1/125 sec into roughly 2 sec, a useful starting point for softening a stream or giving clouds movement; adjust the exposure to suit the scene. The 95mm size is the other detail to plan around: your filter setup needs to accept that size, so it’s worth matching the filter to your existing gear before setting out. I’d suggest it to landscape photographers who want to work with slow shutter speeds in brighter conditions. It’s a strong reduction, so it won’t suit every lighting situation; keep it for scenes where that longer exposure is the point.
