Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x100mm Neutral Density 1.2 (4 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x100mm Neutral Density 1.2 (4 Stops) | Four stops of light control in a square filter
The defining design decision is the 100 × 100 mm square format: it gives you a broad, flat filter shape to work with when controlling light in a composed shot. The Firecrest Ultra is a neutral density filter with a 1.2 strength, reducing the light reaching the camera by four stops. That reduction is useful when you want a slower shutter speed in daylight, or want to use a wider aperture without changing the exposure you’re aiming for. It suits landscape photographers working with moving water, surf or clouds, and anyone who wants deliberate motion blur rather than a frozen scene. A four-stop reduction can, for example, turn a shutter speed of 1/125 sec into roughly 1/8 sec at the same aperture and ISO. That’s enough to suggest movement in a flowing subject while keeping the surrounding scene properly exposed. Its appeal is focused: a clear, defined reduction in light, in a square 100 × 100 mm format.
Specialist Note
Photographers framing waterfalls, surf or cloud movement will get the most from this filter. Its four-stop reduction gives you room to slow the shutter in daylight; as a starting example, 1/125 sec becomes about 1/8 sec without changing aperture or ISO. That can soften moving water while retaining detail in the landscape around it. The 100 × 100 mm square format also matters to your setup: plan for a square filter rather than a circular screw-in type. I’d consider it when you want a measured, moderate long-exposure effect; for much longer exposures in bright conditions, four stops may not be enough on its own.
