Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x100mm Neutral Density 5.4 (18 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x100mm Neutral Density 5.4 (18 Stops) | Long exposures in bright light
The defining decision is the 100 x 100 mm square format: it provides a clear, flat area for reducing light in front of the lens. This is a neutral density filter, so it’s intended to change exposure without adding a colour effect. Its 5.4 density corresponds to an 18-stop reduction, making it suited to photographers who want exposures far longer than the available light would normally allow. Think moving water rendered softly, or cloud movement recorded across a landscape. It also gives you room to use a wider aperture in bright conditions when you want a shallow depth of field. This is a specialised filter for deliberate exposure control, rather than an everyday protective filter. If you plan to use it for long exposures, you’ll want to decide on your framing and exposure approach before adding such a strong reduction.
Specialist Note
Once the Firecrest Ultra is in place, the exposure changes dramatically: its 18-stop reduction turns a fast shutter speed into a long one. That’s the appeal for landscape photographers who want moving water to blur or clouds to streak; for example, a metered 1/4000 sec becomes about 65 seconds at the same aperture and ISO. Its ND 5.4 rating tells you this is a very strong filter, so compose and focus before fitting it, then set the longer exposure. The 100 x 100 mm square format gives you a defined filter surface to position in front of the lens. I’d choose it for intentional long exposures, not quick changes between shots.
