Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x150mm ND Soft Edge Reverse Grad 0.6 (2 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x150mm ND Soft Edge Reverse Grad 0.6 (2 Stops) | Balance bright horizons with foreground detail
Balancing a bright horizon with a darker foreground is where a reverse graduated ND filter helps: it reduces light across the sky while leaving the lower part of the scene clearer. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x150mm ND Soft Edge Reverse Grad 0.6 (2 Stops) has a soft transition and provides two stops of light reduction at its densest area. That makes it useful for landscape photographers facing a bright strip of sky at sunrise or sunset, especially when they want to retain detail in both sky and land in a single exposure. Position the darker part over the bright horizon, then adjust the filter’s placement to suit the scene. The soft edge gives a more gradual transition than a hard-edged grad, while the reverse pattern puts the strongest reduction around the horizon rather than at the very top of the frame. It’s a focused tool for scenes with a relatively level bright horizon; it won’t match every uneven skyline.
Specialist Note
At 100 × 150 mm, this filter gives you room to position the graduated area precisely across the horizon, which matters when the bright band sits low in the frame. Its 0.6 strength means a two-stop reduction at the darkest part, enough to rein in a bright sunset sky without applying that full reduction to the foreground. I’d use it for a seascape or open landscape with a fairly level horizon: align the densest area with the brightest strip, then check that the soft transition doesn’t cross the land. Tall peaks, trees or buildings can interrupt that clean line, so this reverse grad is at its most useful when the horizon is simple.
