Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x150mm ND Soft Edge Reverse Grad 1.2 (4 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x150mm ND Soft Edge Reverse Grad 1.2 (4 Stops) | Balance a bright horizon with the landscape
Keep a bright sunset horizon from overwhelming the darker landscape below it. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x150mm ND Soft Edge Reverse Grad 1.2 (4 Stops) is a graduated neutral-density filter for scenes where the brightest area sits near the horizon. Its 1.2 density reduces light by four stops at the densest part, helping you hold detail in the sky while retaining a more natural exposure for the land or water. The reverse graduation is suited to a bright band around the horizon, while the soft transition helps the change in density blend into the scene. It’s especially useful for landscape photographers working with sunrises, sunsets or bright coastal horizons, where a single exposure can otherwise leave either the sky or foreground looking too bright. Place the graduation across the horizon and adjust its position to suit the scene.
Specialist Note
The 100 x 150 mm sheet gives you room to position the graduated area over the horizon rather than having its transition fixed in the middle of your composition. I’d use the reverse graduation for a sunset over open water: line up its denser band with the bright horizon, then check that the upper sky and foreground still look balanced. The soft edge makes that transition less abrupt, but a graduated filter can be harder to place cleanly when hills or buildings cut across the skyline. It suits landscape photographers who want to control a bright horizon in-camera while keeping the foreground visible.
