Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 58mm Neutral Density 6.6 (22 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 58mm Neutral Density 6.6 (22 Stop) | Create very long exposures in bright light
On a bright day, a moving river or passing clouds can look frozen at the shutter speeds your exposure requires. This Formatt Hitech neutral density filter cuts the light reaching the camera by 22 stops, letting you use much longer exposures without changing the scene’s brightness in the same way you would by closing the aperture or lowering ISO. It’s aimed at photographers who want pronounced motion blur in daylight, or who need a very long exposure for a deliberate, minimal composition. The 58mm size is for a lens with a matching filter fitting. This is a particularly strong reduction, so it suits planned, static compositions better than quick changes between subjects. Work out the exposure before fitting the filter, then allow for the substantial time increase. For ordinary exposure adjustments, this level of density is far more than you need.
Specialist Note
Fast shutter speeds can leave water and clouds looking almost motionless; this filter gives you room to turn that movement into a blur. Its 22-stop reduction is substantial: a metered 1/1000 sec exposure becomes roughly 70 minutes, so use a stable tripod and choose a scene where the composition can stay still. It suits landscape photographers who want a very smooth water surface or softened cloud movement in daylight, rather than anyone needing to react quickly. The 58mm size keeps the choice straightforward if your lens takes that filter size. One honest point: at this density, exposure planning matters, and it’s a poor fit for changing action or handheld work.
