Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 4.8 (16 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 4.8 (16 Stop) | Make daylight long exposures
Longer exposures can turn flowing water into a smooth sweep and give moving clouds a streaked look; this neutral density filter lets you pursue that effect in bright conditions by reducing the light reaching the camera. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra is for photographers who deliberately work with motion blur and want to keep their chosen aperture and ISO while using a much slower shutter speed. Compose and focus before fitting a dense ND filter, then base your exposure calculation on a reading made without it. That workflow matters: with so much light cut, a practical exposure reading through the camera may be difficult. It’s best suited to planned, stable-camera landscape or architectural exposures, rather than quick shutter-speed adjustments. The result depends on the scene and exposure, but this filter provides the light reduction needed to make very long shutter times achievable.
Specialist Note
The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 4.8 is best at creating very long exposures in bright conditions. Its 16-stop reduction can turn a metered 1/60 sec into about 18 minutes 12 seconds at the same aperture and ISO. That’s useful for smoothing a river or blurring moving clouds, as long as the camera stays steady and the light remains consistent. The 82mm figure is the filter diameter, so it’s for a lens setup that accepts an 82mm filter. I’d treat this as a dedicated long-exposure filter, not one for modest shutter-speed changes: 16 stops is a substantial reduction, and it calls for a planned shot.
