Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 6.6 (22 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 6.6 (22 Stop) | Create extreme long exposures
A 22-stop reduction makes this filter a tool for long exposures in bright conditions, rather than a subtle adjustment to everyday exposure. It suits landscape photographers and anyone who wants to show movement over time: flowing water can become a smooth blur, while moving clouds can leave a softer trace across the sky. The 82mm size is the practical detail to match to your setup; it’s made for use where an 82mm filter is called for. The strongest reason to choose this particular density is the amount of light it cuts. That gives you room to use a much slower shutter speed without immediately closing down the aperture or lowering ISO as far as possible. It does take planning: such a large exposure change calls for a reading and calculation before you start the long exposure.
Specialist Note
22 stops means a dramatic change in shutter time: a metered 1/8000 sec exposure becomes about 8 minutes 44 seconds at the same aperture and ISO. That’s useful for smoothing water or recording cloud movement in daylight, when a modest ND filter wouldn’t give you anything like that time. I’d meter the scene first, then add 22 stops to the shutter time and use the 82mm size only with a setup that takes that filter size. This suits patient landscape work especially well. The honest trade-off is that the exposure calculation is essential; this density is a specialist tool, not a quick everyday filter.
