Formatt Hitech Glass 100x100mm Soft White 1/2
Formatt Hitech Glass 100x100mm Soft White 1/2 | A gentle softening effect in glass
Hard, crisp-looking light can feel too stark when you want a softer image. The Formatt Hitech Glass 100x100mm Soft White 1/2 is a square photographic filter made to give light a gentler character. Its Soft White name describes the look it’s intended to create, while the 1/2 designation offers a specific strength to work with rather than an unspecified effect. It suits photographers who want to soften the rendering of a scene while keeping the choice of when to use that effect in their hands. Try it with a backlit portrait or a scene with bright highlights when you want a less clinical feel. The 100x100mm format gives you a clearly defined square size to account for in your filter setup. It’s a focused creative tool, rather than a general-purpose UV filter.
Specialist Note
For a backlit portrait, I’d begin with the 1/2 version and judge the softness against the brightest areas in the frame. That strength gives you a deliberate starting point for a gentler look without committing to a more pronounced effect. The glass construction is a practical detail I value: it gives this filter a solid, clear surface for shaping the image. Its 100x100mm square format also makes the size easy to identify when you’re arranging filters for a setup. I’d consider it for portraits or bright, high-contrast scenes where you want softened light. Just keep in mind that it’s a creative effect filter, not a UV filter for general protection.
