Formatt Hitech Onyx ND 85x90mm Neutral Density 1.2 (4 Stops) | Four stops for longer exposures

To turn moving water into a softer blur, or show motion in a passing scene, you need a longer shutter speed than the available light may allow. The Formatt Hitech Onyx ND 85x90mm Neutral Density 1.2 (4 Stops) cuts the light reaching your camera by four stops, making longer exposures possible without changing the scene’s lighting. It suits photographers who want to show movement in a still image rather than freeze it. For example, if your exposure without the filter is 1/125 sec, keeping the same aperture and ISO brings it to about 1/8 sec with this filter. That gives you room to make water flow together in the frame or let moving subjects leave a trace. Its 85 × 90 mm dimensions give you a specific filter size to account for when planning your setup.

Specialist Note

The 85 × 90 mm dimensions give this filter a defined footprint, so I’d keep its size in mind while planning your filter arrangement. I’d suggest the Onyx to photographers who want a measured four-stop reduction for motion blur, rather than a much longer exposure by default. For a stream, for instance, if your meter calls for 1/125 sec at your chosen aperture and ISO, ND 1.2 takes you to about 1/8 sec; that can soften the water while retaining detail in the surroundings. Four stops is a useful, finite adjustment, so it won’t replace careful exposure choices when the light or subject movement calls for something different.
