Freewell Hard Stop Variable ND (Threaded) 6-9 Stop Bright Day 82mm
Freewell Hard Stop Variable ND (Threaded) 6-9 Stop Bright Day 82mm | Strong light control for bright-day exposures
Bright sunlight can leave you with more light than you want, especially when you’re trying to keep a particular shutter speed or aperture. The Freewell Hard Stop Variable ND gives you adjustable light reduction in a 6–9 stop range, so you can respond to changing brightness without swapping between several fixed-strength filters. It’s a threaded 82mm filter, made for setups that use that filter size, and its range is aimed at bright-day conditions. That makes it relevant for photographers wanting longer exposures in daylight, or for video makers who need to manage exposure while keeping their chosen shutter speed. The adjustment is useful when the light shifts, but this is a strong-range filter: it starts at 6 stops, so it’s intended for situations where substantial light reduction is called for, rather than subtle shade correction.
Specialist Note
“Is the 6–9 stop range too strong for ordinary daylight?” It can be, but this Freewell is aimed at bright conditions where that stronger reduction is useful. I’d consider it for a daylight landscape when you want a longer exposure to soften moving water, or for video when you need to hold your chosen shutter speed in strong sun. The 82mm threaded size suits a lens with a matching filter thread, so the size is the first practical detail to match to your setup. Its 6–9 stop range gives you room to adjust within that strong-light bracket; the honest limit is that it won’t cover very mild light reduction below 6 stops.
