Kase Revolution Soft GND 1.2 82 mm
Kase Revolution Soft GND 1.2 82 mm | Balance bright skies with the land
The soft graduated-density design is the defining choice here: it lets you reduce brightness gradually across part of the frame, rather than drawing a hard line through the image. That’s useful when a bright sky is pulling attention away from a darker landscape, especially around sunrise or sunset. The Kase Revolution Soft GND 1.2 is made for photographers who want to manage that difference in-camera while keeping the landscape visible, instead of letting the sky dictate the exposure. Its soft transition is best suited to scenes where the horizon isn’t a perfectly clean, level line; the fade is easier to blend around a varied skyline than a sharply divided effect. This is a focused tool for balancing a particular kind of scene, rather than a general-purpose filter. If dramatic brightness differences between sky and land are a regular part of your compositions, it gives you a practical way to handle them.
Specialist Note
At the coast just after sunrise, the bright band above the water can overwhelm the darker foreground. This is where I’d reach for this filter: place its transition across the horizon, then compose so the sky’s brightness is brought down without losing detail in the land. The 1.2 strength works out to about four stops of light reduction, so it’s a meaningful correction, not a subtle tint. The 82 mm size makes it a specific match for a lens with that filter size. I’d recommend it to landscape photographers who often face bright skies; the soft graduation is helpful, though a very irregular skyline still needs careful placement.
