Laowa Ranger S35 11-18mm T2.9 Lite (Lao-1118l-Plef)

Laowa Ranger S35 11-18mm T2.9 Lite | Wide framing with control for filmmaking

Laowa has chosen a wide zoom range with a T2.9 maximum aperture, giving filmmakers room to adjust framing without changing lenses. The Ranger S35 11-18mm T2.9 Lite is an interchangeable wide-angle zoom for APS-C cameras, made for video and filmmaking. Its broad view suits establishing shots, interiors and scenes where you want to keep more of the setting in frame. The zoom also lets you move from a sweeping composition to a closer, more focused view of the action. Manual focus makes it a better fit for planned shots, where you can set focus deliberately, than for situations that rely on fast autofocus. It’s a specialist tool for filmmakers who want wide compositions and hands-on control over their focus and framing.

Framing on set

With a wide zoom, the position of the camera has a strong effect on the composition. Move in to give a foreground subject more presence, or step back to show more of the space around it. For a room or location opener, start with a broad view; for the next shot, tighten the framing to bring attention to a person or detail. Manual focus rewards a little preparation: decide where the subject will be, set focus for that position, then keep the camera move and subject movement within that plan.
