Meyer Optik Görlitz Biotar 58mm f/1.5 II Leica L-Mount
Meyer Optik Görlitz Biotar 58mm f/1.5 II Leica L-Mount | A manual-focus portrait prime
In a quiet portrait session, the Biotar 58mm f/1.5 II gives you room to work carefully with focus and depth of field. It’s an interchangeable standard prime lens for Leica L-mount cameras, with a 58mm focal length and a maximum aperture of f/1.5. That wide aperture is useful when you want a softly separated subject or need to work with less light, while the standard focal length suits portraits that include a little of the setting as well as the person. Focus is manual, so this lens is best suited to photographers who enjoy making the focus point themselves rather than relying on autofocus. Its strongest match is considered portrait work: a still sitter, deliberate framing and time to place focus precisely. If that’s how you like to photograph, the Biotar offers a direct, hands-on way to shape the image.
Specialist Note
That f/1.5 maximum aperture gives you useful control over how much of a portrait stays in focus; for a close head-and-shoulders frame, focus carefully on the nearer eye and use f/1.5 when you want the background to fall away. The 58mm focal length also leaves a little breathing room around your subject, so you can include context without stepping into a very wide view. I’d point this lens towards patient portraits and still-life work, where manual focus feels considered rather than rushed. With a moving sitter, keeping focus exactly where you want it takes more attention.
