Meyer Optik Görlitz Trioplan 50mm f/2.8 II Canon RF-Mount | A classic view for deliberate shooting

Finding a standard lens that gives you a familiar view while letting you choose focus yourself can be harder than it sounds. The Meyer Optik Görlitz Trioplan 50mm f/2.8 II is an interchangeable standard prime for Canon RF cameras, with a 50mm focal length suited to street photography, travel and portraits. You compose with a fixed focal length and decide where focus should fall, rather than relying on autofocus. That makes it a good match for photographers who enjoy taking time over framing, or want a dedicated lens for everyday scenes and people. Its f/2.8 maximum aperture gives you room to work in available light and to use a shallower depth of field when a portrait calls for subject emphasis. It’s a deliberate, hands-on way to shoot, rather than a lens built around speed or automation.

A considered way to frame

For a thoughtful street frame, settle on a background and wait for a subject to enter the composition. On a travel day, changing your position instead of zooming can help you pay closer attention to the scene. For portraits, take a moment to check focus before pressing the shutter.

Specialist Note

Manual focus does ask you to be more deliberate, so I wouldn’t choose this for fast action; I’d still recommend it for unhurried portraits and street scenes. The f/2.8 maximum aperture lets you open up for a portrait, then focus carefully on the nearer eye. On a Canon RF-S body, its framing is equivalent to 80mm on full frame, which can be handy for tighter portraits without crowding your subject. I’d also consider it for travel when you’re happy to pause and set focus yourself. That’s the trade-off: more involvement, with a very direct way of composing.
