Nikon SZ-3FL Filter

Nikon SZ-3FL Filter: Match flash colour to incandescent light

Unlike a plain diffuser, the Nikon SZ-3FL Filter changes the colour of light from the SB-700 to match the colour temperature of incandescent lighting, while also producing softer flash light. It’s a specialist filter for SB-700 users working in rooms lit by incandescent lamps, where flash can otherwise look different in colour from the ambient light. That makes it useful for indoor portraits, family gatherings and photographs of objects in a warmly lit room: the flash is adjusted towards the same kind of light as the surroundings, rather than retaining a contrasting colour. The softer quality is another reason to use it when you want flash to blend more gently into a scene. The SZ-3FL combines these two effects in one filter, with a specific purpose rather than a general-purpose diffusion role. It’s particularly relevant when the room’s incandescent lighting is part of the look you want to retain. For SB-700 owners who regularly photograph in those conditions, it addresses both colour balance and the character of the flash in a single accessory.

Why it is useful

• Incandescent-light colour: The filter shifts the SB-700’s flash colour towards the colour temperature of incandescent lamps. That’s useful in a warmly lit room, where flash colour would otherwise differ from the surrounding light.
• Softer flash: The SZ-3FL also softens the flash light. For portraits or nearby subjects, that gives the flash a gentler character than the unfiltered light.
• Made for the SB-700: This filter is specified for Nikon’s SB-700 flash. Its purpose is clear: adjust that flash’s light for incandescent-lit scenes.
• Useful in mixed lighting: In a room where incandescent lamps provide the ambient light, the filter brings the flash colour closer to that source. This is helpful when you want the room’s warm lighting to remain part of the photograph.
• For people and interiors: Use it for indoor portraits or photographs that include the room around your subject. The incandescent colour match and softer flash address two characteristics of the light in those scenes.
• One specific lighting task: The SZ-3FL is intended for incandescent colour matching, not as a general description of every kind of flash diffusion. Choose it for that lighting situation and its softer-flash effect.
