Radius 48cm Sennheiser MKH816 Nimbus Windshield (19/22)
Radius 48cm Sennheiser MKH816 Nimbus Windshield (19/22) | Wind protection for outdoor recording
At 48cm long, this Nimbus windshield is made in a format suited to the Sennheiser MKH816. That length is the defining choice: a windshield needs to cover the microphone, and this one is named for a specific long microphone rather than presented as a universal fit. It’s intended for sound recordists who need to manage wind noise while capturing dialogue or other audio outdoors. Wind can quickly make a recording harder to use, so a dedicated windshield is a practical part of an outdoor microphone setup. The product name also includes the marking “19/22”, useful to keep in mind when selecting this particular version. If you’re building a kit around the MKH816, this gives you a clearly identified Nimbus windshield to consider; it’s a focused accessory, not a general-purpose microphone purchase.
For outdoor recording setups
A windshield is most relevant when moving air could interfere with the sound you’re recording. For location dialogue, position the microphone toward the speaker and keep the windshield in place as part of the recording setup. The same basic approach can suit outdoor ambience: aim the microphone at the sound you want to capture, and use the windshield when wind is present. This product’s named pairing with the MKH816 makes it most useful to people assembling a setup around that microphone. Its 48cm format is a specific consideration, so it makes sense to plan around the stated microphone rather than assume it’s a fit for other models.
Specialist Note
For sound recordists capturing outdoor dialogue or location ambience, this is a particularly focused piece of kit. The 48cm length tells you to think about the windshield as part of a long-microphone setup, rather than a small cover to tuck away anywhere. It’s named for the Sennheiser MKH816, which makes the intended pairing clear when you’re planning a recording rig. I’d use it for spoken-word recording outside, keeping the microphone aimed at the speaker, or for gathering outdoor atmosphere when wind is a concern. One detail to pay attention to is the 19/22 marking: keep that version identifier in view when selecting the windshield. Its specificity is useful, but it isn’t a catch-all accessory.
