Rycote 10cm SGM Foam & Windjammer (24/25)
Rycote 10cm SGM Foam & Windjammer (24/25) | Helps tame wind noise on location
Wind across a microphone can turn clear dialogue into a distracting rush, especially during outdoor interviews or location recording. The Rycote 10cm SGM Foam & Windjammer (24/25) is a microphone wind cover, combining foam and a windjammer to help reduce that problem. It suits sound recordists working with the specific microphone size indicated by its name, and anyone replacing a matching cover. The 10cm and 24/25 markings give you concrete identifiers when choosing the right cover, rather than relying on a general description such as “small microphone.” Its purpose is straightforward: add wind protection without changing how you record. That makes it most useful for dialogue and other close-miked recordings where wind noise would be hard to remove later. It can help in a breeze, but no cover can remove every gust; for exposed locations, microphone placement still matters.
Specialist Note
For a 10cm SGM set up for an outdoor interview, I’d fit this before the first take, while there’s still time to listen for wind on headphones. The foam and windjammer are the useful pairing here: the foam gives you a close-fitting first layer, while the windjammer adds a further barrier when air is moving. The 24/25 marking is worth paying attention to when replacing a cover; I wouldn’t choose by the 10cm label alone. It suits location recordists who need to keep spoken words clear in a light breeze. Keep the microphone close to the speaker and out of the direct wind where you can. Strong gusts can still get through.
