Slik 6179 Quick Release Shoe | Steady support where tripods get in the way

A full tripod can feel like one piece of kit too many at a crowded event, and it takes up room when you’re following action. The Slik 6179 Quick Release Shoe is a monopod for photographers who want support without setting up a tripod. It’s particularly suited to sports and wildlife photography with long lenses, where holding the camera steady for extended periods can be tiring. It also makes sense at events where space is tight and you need to keep moving with the scene. The quick release shoe is part of the product’s name, but the facts available here don’t establish a particular camera fit or release mechanism, so it’s best to check those details against your setup before relying on them. Think of the 6179 as a support for moments when a tripod is awkward, not a substitute for one in every situation.

Specialist Note

At a touchline match, I’d reach for the Slik 6179 when a tripod would obstruct the people around me. Its monopod format is the useful distinction: you can support a long lens while keeping your position mobile as play shifts across the field. For wildlife, that same support can help when you’re following a subject through the viewfinder rather than locking your framing in one place. The product is aimed at long-lens sports and wildlife work, so that’s where I’d put it to use first. It’s also suited to events with little spare floor space. One honest limit: a monopod doesn’t offer the freestanding support of a tripod, so you’ll still need to hold and guide your camera.
