Tiffen 44CGN12S 4x4 CLR/ND1.2 Grad SE Filter
Tiffen 44CGN12S 4x4 CLR/ND1.2 Grad SE Filter | Balance bright skies and darker foregrounds
Balance a bright sky against a darker foreground while keeping both in the frame, rather than letting one part dominate the exposure. The Tiffen 44CGN12S is a 4x4 CLR/ND1.2 graduated filter with a soft-edge transition, made for controlled light reduction across part of the image. Its ND1.2 section reduces light by four stops, while the clear area leaves the less-bright part of the scene unaffected. That makes it useful when a landscape has a bright band of sky above land or water, or when a strong light area needs balancing without darkening the whole picture. The soft graduation gives you room to position the transition across the scene instead of creating a hard dividing line. It suits photographers and filmmakers who want to manage contrast at capture, especially with a scene where the bright and dark areas meet along a fairly clear boundary. The 4x4 format is intended for use as a square filter, with its position adjusted to place the grad where the image needs it.
Specialist Note
The square 4x4 format gives you room to slide the graduated area into position, which matters when the horizon sits high or low in the frame. I’d use the ND1.2 section when a bright sky is roughly four stops above the foreground: align the soft transition with the horizon, then expose for a balanced view of both areas. The clear-to-ND graduation keeps that reduction local rather than darkening the whole scene. It’s a considered option for landscapes and similarly divided compositions, but a jagged skyline can make any graduated filter’s boundary harder to place cleanly. Take a moment to line up the transition before recording or taking the picture; that’s where this filter’s soft edge earns its keep.
