Tiffen 44CGN3S 4x4 CLR/ND.3 Grad SE Filter
Tiffen 44CGN3S 4x4 CLR/ND.3 Grad SE Filter | Balance bright skies
Keep a bright sky from overwhelming the landscape below: the Tiffen 44CGN3S is a graduated clear-to-neutral-density filter made for balancing uneven brightness in a frame. It suits landscape and cityscape photographers who want to manage a bright area while keeping the rest of the scene clear. The ND.3 portion gives you a defined level of light reduction, while the graduated design lets that effect transition across the frame rather than covering the whole image. Its SE designation refers to a soft-edge graduation, useful when the boundary between bright sky and land isn’t a perfectly straight horizon. The 4x4 format gives you room to position that transition to suit your composition. This is a focused tool for scenes with a clear difference in brightness, rather than a general-purpose filter for every lighting situation.
Specialist Note
The Tiffen 44CGN3S is best at bringing a bright sky and a darker foreground into better balance. I’d consider it for landscapes or a city skyline at sunrise: place the graduated area over the bright part of the scene and line up its transition with the horizon or roofline. The soft-edge graduation is helpful when that boundary isn’t perfectly level, since the change is less abrupt across the picture. Its 4x4 format gives you room to adjust the placement, while the ND.3 designation gives you a set rather than variable strength. That makes it a considered pick for a recurring exposure problem, but less adaptable when the brightness difference changes substantially from one scene to the next.
