Tiffen FW3BPM18 Filter Wheel 3 Black Promist 1/8
Tiffen FW3BPM18 Filter Wheel 3 Black Promist 1/8 | Gentle highlight bloom with restrained diffusion
Bright points of light can take on a gentle halo, while faces and other details remain clear. The Tiffen FW3BPM18 is named as a Black Pro-Mist 1/8 filter in the Filter Wheel 3 range, for photographers and filmmakers who want a softened, less crisp rendering rather than a heavy haze. That restrained strength makes it a considered option for portraits with practical lights in the background, or scenes where a bright source should bloom softly without taking over the frame. The look comes from the Black Pro-Mist effect, not from adding a digital glow afterwards. It’s best suited to people who want that character in-camera and are happy to shape a shot around it. Keep the light source visible or near the edge of the frame to make the glow part of the composition; for a cleaner, sharper rendering, this isn’t the filter to reach for.
Specialist Note
First-time Black Pro-Mist users sometimes expect a strong, misty wash across the whole image; the 1/8 strength is a gentler way to explore the look. I’d consider it for a close portrait with a lamp or window light behind the subject: keep that bright source in the composition and let its glow soften the scene, rather than adding more lights. The “Black Pro-Mist” name points to a softened highlight character, while “1/8” tells you this is the restrained strength in the title. It suits filmmakers and portrait photographers who want a little bloom while keeping the subject readable. The effect is deliberate, so it won’t suit every scene.
