Urth 39mm Ethereal ½ Black Mist Filter Plus+
Urth 39mm Ethereal ½ Black Mist Filter Plus+ | A softer, more atmospheric image
Bright lights can look hard in a portrait or night scene, especially when you want the frame to feel gentle rather than crisp and clinical. The Urth Ethereal ½ Black Mist Filter Plus+ is a photographic effect filter for softening the look of highlights and adding a subtle, hazy glow around bright areas. It suits photographers and filmmakers who want that softer rendering in camera, rather than relying entirely on editing afterwards. Use it for portraits with a bright window or practical lights in the background, or for evening scenes where lamps and signs can give the image a more atmospheric character. The effect is part of the picture as you make it, so it’s worth thinking about the light in your composition: bright points are where the misted look will be most apparent. This is a creative filter, not a neutral protection filter; its appeal is the visible change it makes to the image.
Specialist Note
The 39mm ring keeps this filter suited to lenses that take that size, while the ½ strength gives the effect a noticeable presence in the image. I’d consider it for portraits where a bright window or a small light source sits behind your subject: keep that highlight in the frame and let the filter soften its appearance. It can also lend evening street scenes a gentler feel around illuminated signs and lamps. This is for someone who wants the misted character to be part of the capture, rather than a look added later. The honest trade-off is that it changes the rendering, so it isn’t the filter I’d reach for when I want highlights to stay clean and sharply defined.
