Urth 39mm Ethereal White Mist Filter Plus+
Urth 39mm Ethereal White Mist Filter Plus+ | Gives highlights a softer, dreamy glow
Hard, crisp light can make portraits and night scenes feel harsher than you want. The Urth 39mm Ethereal White Mist Filter Plus+ is a creative filter for softening that look, giving bright highlights a diffused glow and taking some edge off contrast. It suits photographers who want a gentler, more atmospheric rendering in camera, especially for portraits, city lights and scenes with bright windows or lamps. Keep a light source in or close to the frame and its softened character is easier to see; in more even light, the effect will be subtler. It’s a deliberate look rather than a neutral correction, so it won’t suit every subject or style. If you value crisp, unsoftened detail above atmosphere, you may prefer to leave a mist filter off. For expressive portraits and light-filled scenes, though, it offers a simple way to shape the mood as you shoot.
Specialist Note
For close portraits with a lens that takes a 39mm filter, I’d use this when a window or lamp gives you a bright highlight to soften. The 39mm size is the practical detail to match to the lens’s filter thread; the filter’s Ethereal White Mist name points to the softer, diffused rendering it’s intended to create. Keep a small light source in or near the frame and let it catch the subject’s hair or skin to make that look more apparent. It suits portraits and atmospheric evening scenes. One caveat: if you want crisp, neutral rendering, this isn’t the filter I’d reach for.
