Urth 49mm Ethereal 1 Black Mist Filter Plus+
Urth 49mm Ethereal 1 Black Mist Filter Plus+ | A softer, atmospheric look
Without a diffusion filter, bright highlights and fine detail tend to look crisp and clearly defined. The Urth 49mm Ethereal 1 Black Mist Filter Plus+ is for photographers who want a softer, more atmospheric rendering in camera, rather than adding that look later in editing. It’s aimed at portrait makers, filmmakers and anyone drawn to gentle glow around light sources or a less clinical feel in a scene. Use it when you want that effect to be part of the image, especially in portraits with bright light in the frame or night scenes where point lights can contribute to the mood. The Ethereal 1 name identifies this particular Black Mist variant; it’s the product to consider when that named look is what you’re after. Keep in mind that a softer rendering is a creative choice, not a way to increase detail. This filter suits deliberate styling more than a neutral, untouched result.
Specialist Note
The honest trade-off is that a Black Mist look softens the image’s crispness; that’s precisely why this filter makes sense when you want a more atmospheric result. Its 49mm size means it’s intended for a lens with a matching filter thread, so check that measurement before choosing it. I’d consider it for a backlit portrait, where you can place bright light in the scene, or a night image with visible point lights, letting those highlights help create the soft, glowing character. The Ethereal 1 designation tells you which version you’re buying, rather than leaving you to guess from the broad Black Mist name. It suits photographers who want that effect at capture, and who are happy to trade some crispness for mood.
