Urth 49mm Variable ND2 400 + ¼ Black Mist Filter Plus+
Urth 49mm Variable ND2 400 + ¼ Black Mist Filter Plus+ | Control light, soften highlights
Bright light can leave you choosing between a shutter speed that’s too fast and an aperture you’d rather not close down. This Urth filter combines a variable ND2–400 range with a ¼ Black Mist effect, giving you a way to manage incoming light while adding a gentle glow around highlights. It suits photographers and filmmakers who want more control in daylight, especially when they’re aiming for slower motion in a scene or a wider aperture in bright conditions. The Black Mist element also softens the rendering of bright points of light, so it can bring a more atmospheric look to portraits, night scenes and video. It’s a distinctive combination: exposure control and a visible diffusion effect in one filter. Choose it for images where that softened look is part of the plan, rather than when you need a completely crisp, neutral rendering.
Specialist Note
“Can I adjust the exposure and get a softer look with this one filter?” Yes—that’s exactly the combination here. The ND2–400 range gives you room to reduce light as conditions change, which is handy for keeping motion in a bright outdoor scene or holding a wider aperture for a portrait. The ¼ Black Mist effect takes the edge off highlights, so bright lamps or reflections can appear gentler in the frame. I’d suggest it to someone who wants that softer character in their finished images, not someone who needs a strictly clean look. The diffusion is part of the deal, so plan your shot around it.
