Urth 72mm Ethereal 1/8 Diffusion Lens Filter (Plus+)
Urth 72mm Ethereal 1/8 Diffusion Lens Filter (Plus+) | Softens bright highlights
Bright points of light take on a gentler look, while fine detail keeps more definition than it would with a stronger diffusion effect. The Urth Ethereal 1/8 is a lens filter for photographers and filmmakers who want a subtle, softened rendering without making the whole image look hazy. It’s especially suited to portraits, evening street scenes and other frames where bright highlights can feel a little harsh. The 1/8 strength gives you a restrained starting point: leave it on for a consistent look, or use it when the light and subject benefit from a softer feel. Diffusion does affect fine contrast, so it won’t be the right choice for every scene. If you want a delicate change in the character of the image rather than a dramatic effect, this is the sort of filter to consider.
Specialist Note
A common surprise with diffusion filters is that even a subtle one can soften the crispness of fine detail; the 1/8 strength here helps keep that effect gentle. I’d suggest it to someone who wants a more flattering portrait rendering or a softer feel around lights in an evening scene. Frame your subject with bright points in view and let the filter take the edge off their contrast; keep it off when every fine texture needs to read sharply. The 72mm size is for a lens with a matching 72mm filter thread, so it’s worth matching that measurement to the lens you plan to use. It’s a specific look, not an all-purpose filter.
What the diffusion effect does
Diffusion works by softening the rendering of light and fine contrast, rather than adding a colour or pattern to the frame. That can suit skin tones and small highlights, but it may also make delicate texture appear less crisp. The effect is visible in the image itself, so compose with the light you want to soften in mind. For a natural-looking result, use the filter selectively when the scene calls for it; for maximum bite and detail, leave it off.
