Urth 77mm Ethereal ½ Black Mist Filter Plus+
Urth 77mm Ethereal ½ Black Mist Filter Plus+ | Soften highlights for a cinematic look
Soften bright highlights and give portraits or night scenes a gentler, more atmospheric feel with the Urth 77mm Ethereal ½ Black Mist Filter Plus+. Its ½-strength Black Mist effect is made for photographers who want a softer rendering in camera, rather than adding the look afterwards. Point it towards a scene with practical lights, bright windows or backlight and those highlights can take on a more diffused appearance, while the overall image feels less crisp and contrasty. It suits portrait work, music and event photography, and any scene where a clean digital image feels a little too clinical. The effect is part of the picture as you make it, so it can shape your choices while you shoot. This is a creative filter, not a UV filter: choose it for its distinctive rendering, not as an everyday protective layer.
What the Black Mist effect adds
- Bright points of light take on a softer, more atmospheric presence.
- The image has a gentler feel than a fully crisp, high-contrast rendering.
- The ½ strength gives you a defined diffusion look to work with in camera.
Using the effect with intention
For a portrait, place a bright window or other light source in the scene and watch how it contributes to the mood. For night photography, include visible lights in your composition so the diffusion has something to work with. The filter shapes the whole image, so keep it on when you want that softer character and take it off when you prefer a more direct rendering.
Specialist Note
The 77mm size is the practical starting point: it’s intended for a lens with a matching 77mm filter thread, so check that measurement on the lens itself. The ½ Black Mist strength gives the filter a clear creative purpose; I’d suggest it to portrait photographers who want highlights to feel softer, or to anyone framing a night scene with visible lights. Compose with those bright elements in the picture to make the diffusion part of the mood, rather than expecting it to change only the background. One honest point: this is a look-making filter, so it won’t suit every image. If you want crisp, unaltered contrast, leave it off.
