Urth 82mm Ethereal 1/4 Diffusion Lens Filter (Plus+)
Urth 82mm Ethereal 1/4 Diffusion Lens Filter (Plus+) | A softer, gentler look
In a portrait with a bright window or lamps behind the subject, sharp highlights can draw the eye away from the face. The Urth Ethereal 1/4 Diffusion Lens Filter is made to soften that kind of light, giving highlights a gentler presence in the image. It suits photographers and filmmakers who want a less crisp, more atmospheric rendering without relying on editing to create the effect afterwards. Try it for portraits, night scenes with points of light, or close-ups where a softer mood feels right. The 1/4 designation identifies the filter’s diffusion strength, so this is a considered creative effect rather than a clear protective filter. Diffusion changes the look as you shoot, which can be useful when you want the effect consistently across a set. It’s a specialised tool, though: if you prefer hard-edged detail and clean highlights, you may not want it on every lens.
Specialist Note
The 82mm diameter makes this a size-specific filter: choose it for a lens marked 82mm at the filter ring, and it can stay in your workflow for scenes where you want a softer image. The 1/4 diffusion strength is the key creative detail; it gives you a defined diffusion effect without jumping to a stronger grade. For a portrait, try placing a bright window just behind the subject so the highlights take on a gentler character. At night, let a few street lamps sit in the background to bring out the effect. I’d keep it off when crisp, hard contrast is the aim.
