Urth 82mm ND64 (6 Stop) Lens Filter Pro
Urth 82mm ND64 (6 Stop) Lens Filter Pro | Longer exposures in bright light
Urth 82mm ND64 (6 Stop) Lens Filter Pro reduces incoming light by six stops, giving you more room to use a slower shutter in bright conditions. It suits photographers who want movement in a scene to register as a soft blur, such as water flowing over rocks or clouds shifting across a landscape. ND64 means the filter passes one-sixty-fourth of the light that would reach the lens without it. That lets you lengthen exposure while keeping your chosen aperture and ISO, rather than closing the aperture simply to control brightness. The 82mm size is for a lens with a matching filter thread, so check the diameter marked on your lens before choosing it. Its fixed six-stop strength is especially useful when you want a substantial exposure change in daylight; it’s less suited to situations where only a small reduction in light is needed.
For a practical starting point, a scene that meters at 1/30 second without the filter would need roughly two seconds with six stops of reduction, assuming the aperture and ISO stay the same. That’s enough to turn moving water into a smoother sweep, while a tripod helps keep the stationary parts of the frame sharp. The same exposure maths can help you plan a longer daylight exposure before you set up your shot.
Specialist Note
Photographers framing waterfalls, rivers or moving cloud over a bright landscape are the people I’d point towards this filter. Its ND64 rating gives you six stops of reduction, so a 1/30-second exposure can become about two seconds at the same aperture and ISO—use a tripod to keep the landscape itself crisp while the motion softens. The 82mm size matters just as much: it’s intended for a lens with an 82mm filter thread, so match that diameter before buying. I’d choose it for a deliberate long exposure in daylight, rather than as an all-purpose filter; six stops can be more reduction than you want in dimmer light.
