Wooden Camera UMB-1 Universal Mattebox (Clamp On)
Wooden Camera UMB-1 Universal Mattebox (Clamp On) | Control stray light at the lens
Keeping unwanted light off the lens can help preserve a clear, deliberate-looking frame, especially when a bright source sits just outside the shot. The Wooden Camera UMB-1 Universal Mattebox (Clamp On) is a mattebox for filmmakers who want to manage light around the front of the camera. Its purpose is straightforward: shade the lens and give you more control over how stray light affects the image. That can be useful for interviews, scripted scenes and location work, where a small change in camera angle can bring a window or the sun into play. The product is listed as a tripod accessory, though its name describes a clamp-on mattebox. For a cinematographer building a setup around controlled framing and lighting, it offers a dedicated way to address flare at the lens. It’s a focused piece of kit for shaping the shot, rather than a general camera accessory.
Specialist Note
A bright window just outside the frame can send flare across a shot; that’s the kind of distraction a mattebox is meant to help control. I’d consider the UMB-1 for a filmmaker who wants to shade the lens during a backlit interview or exterior dialogue scene. Its clamp-on design points to mounting at the lens, which keeps the job focused on light control at the front of the camera. The “Universal” name suggests a broad intended role, but I wouldn’t take it as a promise that it fits every lens; the clamp still needs to suit your setup. It’s a specific tool, not a full rig.
