Its 63° angle of view suits dialogue scenes, environmental portraits and other shots where you want some context around your subject. The de-clicked aperture is intended for video work: you can adjust exposure without the usual stepped changes of a clicked aperture ring. Manual focus makes it a considered tool for filmmakers who want to set focus themselves, rather than rely on autofocus. It’s particularly suited to controlled video and filmmaking setups where you can plan focus and framing, and where a smooth aperture adjustment is more useful than quick, automatic operation.

Specialist Note

Stepped exposure changes can interrupt a shot just when the light shifts; the de-clicked aperture is there to make that adjustment smooth. I’d look at this lens for a filmmaker who wants direct control during a take. At T2.1, it can help you work in dimmer locations without immediately reaching for more light.
