B+W 501 ND Gradient Filter 50% F-PRO - 52mm
B+W 501 ND Gradient Filter 50% F-PRO - 52mm | Balance bright skies and darker foregrounds
Without a graduated filter, balancing a bright sky with a darker foreground often means accepting lost detail in one of them or correcting the mismatch later. The B+W 501 ND Gradient Filter 50% puts a neutral-density effect across part of the frame, so you can reduce the sky’s brightness while keeping the foreground more open. It suits landscape photographers and anyone framing scenes with a strong difference in brightness between sky and land or buildings. The 50% designation describes the filter’s light reduction in its darker area: half the light passes through there, equivalent to one stop. That makes it useful when you want a measured reduction rather than a very heavy darkening. Its 52mm size is for lenses with a matching filter thread. It’s a straightforward way to manage a bright horizon at the point of capture, though a graduated filter can also darken trees or buildings that extend into the filtered area.
Specialist Note
“Will the B+W 501 help keep a bright sky from overpowering the land?” Yes, that’s exactly the job of this graduated ND filter. The 50% reduction gives you a one-stop difference across its darker area, which can help hold cloud detail while you expose the foreground normally. For a landscape, position that darker part over the sky and keep the horizon where the transition won’t cut awkwardly across a subject. It’s also worth considering for a city view with bright sky above darker streets. The 52mm size suits a lens with a 52mm filter thread; just remember that buildings reaching into the filtered area will be darkened too.
