B+W 502 ND Gradient Filter 25% F-PRO - 58mm
B+W 502 ND Gradient Filter 25% F-PRO - 58mm | Balance bright skies
Without a graduated ND filter, you usually have to choose whether to expose for the land or the sky: a bright sky can lose detail, while protecting it may leave the foreground too dark. The B+W 502 ND Gradient Filter places a neutral-density effect across part of the frame, helping bring those different brightness levels closer together in a single exposure. It suits landscape photographers and anyone composing a view with a bright area beside a darker one. Its 25% rating gives you a defined strength to work with, rather than relying only on exposure adjustments. Use it when the transition between bright and shaded areas can be placed sensibly in the composition, such as along a level horizon. It’s less suited to scenes where the bright area cuts through an irregular skyline; there, the filter’s graduated boundary may be visible. The 58mm size is relevant when choosing it for a lens with a matching filter thread.
Specialist Note
This won’t solve every bright-sky problem: a jagged line of trees can make a graduated filter’s transition awkward. For a coastline or an open landscape, though, this 25% version gives you a deliberate way to tame the brighter part of the frame while retaining detail in the land. I’d compose first, then position the darker portion across the sky and check that the transition follows the horizon before taking the shot. The 58mm size means it’s for a lens with a 58mm filter thread, so it’s a specific fit rather than a universal filter. It suits photographers who regularly frame open horizons and want to balance them in-camera.
