B+W Black Mist 1/2 MRC Nano V-PRO 72mm
B+W Black Mist 1/2 MRC Nano V-PRO 72mm | Softens highlights with a gentle glow
Use a Black Mist filter when you want bright points of light to bloom softly and the overall image to feel less stark. The B+W Black Mist 1/2 MRC Nano V-PRO 72mm gives portraits, video and atmospheric scenes a diffused look in camera, rather than adding that character later in editing. Faces can appear gentler, while lamps, reflections and other bright details take on a soft halo. The effect is especially appealing for portraits with a bright window or practical lights in the background, and for evening scenes where you want the light itself to contribute to the mood. This is a creative filter, not a tool for controlling exposure: its purpose is the look it gives to highlights and contrast. Choose it when that softness is part of your visual style, rather than when you want a completely crisp, neutral rendering.
Specialist Note
This filter gives a bright point light a softer edge without needing to create the glow in editing. The 1/2 strength makes the mist effect a deliberate part of the image, so I’d use it for a portrait with a lamp or bright window behind the subject, or for evening street scenes with lit signs in frame. A 72mm size is for a lens with a matching 72mm filter fitting; it’s worth matching that size before planning a setup. One honest point: the softening is applied across the picture, not just to the highlights you’d select in software. If you want the light to feel gentler throughout the frame, that’s exactly the appeal.
