B+W Black Mist 1/4 MRC Nano V-PRO 95mm
B+W Black Mist 1/4 MRC Nano V-PRO 95mm | Softer highlights, atmospheric portraits
For portraits and scenes with bright points of light, a Black Mist filter gives highlights a softer, more atmospheric appearance. The B+W Black Mist 1/4 MRC Nano V-PRO 95mm is a 95mm filter with a 1/4 strength rating, suited to photographers who want a visible creative effect while keeping the scene recognisable. It’s particularly useful for giving portraits a gentler rendering or taking the hard edge off bright lights in a frame. The effect is part of the image as you make it, rather than something to add later in editing. The 1/4 designation makes this a specific strength within the Black Mist line; it’s worth choosing for the look you want, not as a neutral filter. Its 95mm size is the key practical detail when selecting it for a lens.
The look in practice
Black Mist is about shaping the rendering of highlights, not simply darkening the scene. Try it when you want light sources to feel less crisp in a portrait or a night-time composition. If you’re aiming for a very clean, sharply defined look, the softening effect may not suit that image; for a more atmospheric finish, it gives you a creative option at capture.
Specialist Note
The 95mm rim is the practical starting point: match that diameter to your lens’s filter thread, and you’ll know if this is the size you need. The 1/4 strength is the reason I’d consider this particular Black Mist for portraits or scenes with bright lights: it gives you a defined diffusion look without choosing a stronger numbered grade. I’d use it when you want highlights to feel softer in-camera, especially around point lights in a night scene. One honest consideration: this isn’t a neutral rendering filter, so it won’t suit every image. If crisp, hard-edged detail is the priority, leave the mist effect out.
