Caruba Flash Umbrella Translucent White 109cm | Broaden your flash light

Without a modifier, a flash can produce a small, direct patch of light with hard-edged shadows. This Caruba flash umbrella gives you a larger surface to work with: use it between the flash and your subject so the light passes through the translucent material. It’s a straightforward way to soften the look of flash for portraits or small tabletop subjects, without changing your camera settings or relying on a built-in flash diffuser. The 109cm size gives the light a broad area to pass through, which is particularly useful when you want a more even, gentle look across a person or an object. It suits photographers building a simple off-camera flash setup at home or in a small studio. The umbrella is a light-shaping tool, rather than a way to direct light with pinpoint precision, so it’s best when a softer, wider source is the aim.

Specialist Note

Will the 109cm Caruba umbrella make flash portraits look softer? Yes: its broad, translucent surface lets the flash pass through over a wider area, which can soften the light on your subject. I’d consider it for a simple portrait setup, or for photographing small products where you want to avoid a stark, direct flash look. Aim the flash through the umbrella toward the subject, then adjust its position to change how the light falls. The 109cm diameter gives you room to cover a person or a small scene, but it does take up space; for sharply controlled, narrowly directed light, this isn’t the modifier I’d reach for.
