Cokin Filter Z120 Neutral Grey G1

Cokin Filter Z120 Neutral Grey G1 | Reduce light for longer exposures

Bright conditions can make it hard to choose a longer shutter time or a wider aperture without overexposing the image. The Cokin Filter Z120 Neutral Grey G1 is an ND filter: its neutral-grey design reduces the light reaching the camera, giving you more room to make those exposure choices. It suits photographers who want to manage light without adding a deliberately coloured filter effect. That makes it particularly relevant when you want motion to blur in a bright scene, or want to work with a wider aperture while keeping exposure under control. The key is to treat it as an exposure tool, not an effect that guarantees a particular shutter speed or aperture. Fit the filter, make an exposure, then adjust your settings to suit the scene. Its specific strength matters to the amount of adjustment available, so don’t assume every ND filter gives the same result.

Working with neutral grey

For a flowing-water image, for example, the aim is to keep the shutter open long enough to soften movement. In bright light, an ND filter can help make that longer exposure possible; you’ll still need to choose the shutter time and check the resulting exposure for the scene. For portraits in strong daylight, reducing incoming light can also give you more freedom to use a wider aperture. The neutral-grey description points to light reduction rather than a coloured visual effect, so the subject and its colours remain the focus of the photograph.
