Cokin Nuances ND64 6 F Stops Z
Cokin Nuances ND64 6 F Stops Z | Create longer exposures in bright light
Without a neutral-density filter, bright daylight can leave you with a shutter speed too fast to show motion as a soft blur. The Cokin Nuances ND64 6 F Stops Z reduces the light reaching your camera, giving you room to use a longer exposure or a wider aperture when the scene is bright. It’s suited to photographers who want more control over movement and exposure, especially when photographing flowing water, moving clouds or other changing details. The ND64 rating describes a strong reduction in light; six stops is the exposure adjustment that tells you how to compensate. That makes the filter’s effect useful to plan rather than guess. Choose it when a modest reduction won’t give you enough extra exposure time. A six-stop filter does call for care with exposure settings, but that’s also what makes it helpful when you want motion to register across a longer capture.
Planning your exposure
Take a meter reading before using the filter, then account for the light it removes. For example, a shutter speed of 1/60 sec becomes roughly one second after a six-stop adjustment. That change can turn moving water into a smoother wash, provided the scene is bright enough for the longer exposure. A stable camera support can help keep stationary details sharp while movement blurs. The same reduction can also give you more room to open the aperture in strong light, if you’d rather manage depth of field than add motion blur.
Specialist Note
Does the Cokin Nuances ND64 really let you stretch an exposure by six stops? Yes: ND64 means about one sixty-fourth of the light gets through, which is the six-stop reduction in its name. If your meter suggests 1/60 sec without the filter, around one second is a useful starting point with it in place. I’d consider it for flowing water when you want the movement to soften, or for clouds when you want them to travel across the frame. It suits photographers who are comfortable adjusting exposure deliberately. One practical point: at these longer shutter speeds, steady support matters if you want the rest of the scene crisp.
