It’s particularly suited to planned video work where the camera position and framing can be chosen with intention. Think tightly framed dialogue, or details and subjects that are too far away to approach. The long focal length gives those scenes a focused, deliberate feel, while the anamorphic design brings a different shape to the final image. If you’re building a cinema setup around Canon EF, this is a specialist option for adding long-lens anamorphic shots to your kit.

Specialist Note

T2.8 gives you more room to work as available light drops, without having to abandon the shot straight away. The 180mm focal length is best used when you can give the camera some distance: it’s well suited to picking out a performer in a scene or framing a far-off detail without moving in. For a dialogue close-up, set your camera position first, then use the manual focus to make deliberate focus changes between subject and background. That hands-on approach suits controlled filmmaking, but it does ask for careful focus work. I’d plan for that rather than expecting quick, casual reframing.
