Formatt Hitech FC ND 100x150mm (4x6) NDSEG 1.2 (4stops)
Formatt Hitech FC ND 100x150mm (4x6) NDSEG 1.2 (4stops) | Balance bright skies in landscape scenes
The 100 x 150 mm graduated format is what sets this Formatt Hitech ND filter apart: you can position its darker area over a bright sky while keeping the foreground less affected. It suits landscape photographers working with a scene that has a clear division between bright and darker areas, such as a pale sky above land or water. The NDSEG 1.2 rating represents a four-stop reduction in the filtered area, helping bring that brighter portion closer to the exposure of the rest of the frame. That makes it most useful when you want to retain detail across a high-contrast scene without darkening the whole image evenly. The rectangular shape also gives you room to place the grad where the composition needs it. It’s a focused tool for balancing exposure in-camera, rather than a general-purpose ND filter for reducing light across the entire frame.
Specialist Note
The Formatt Hitech FC NDSEG 1.2 is made for holding back a bright sky in a landscape. Its 100 x 150 mm rectangular format lets you slide the graduated area into position, which is handy when the horizon sits away from the centre of your composition. I’d use it for a bright-sky, darker-land scene: align the transition with the horizon, then meter for the land and let the four-stop grad reduce the sky’s brightness. It suits landscape photographers who want control over that contrast in the frame. One limitation: a mountain, tree or building crossing the transition can also be darkened, so check the placement carefully.
