Formatt Hitech FC ND 95mm Graduated ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech FC ND 95mm Graduated ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter | Balances bright skies and darker foregrounds
When a landscape has a bright sky above a much darker foreground, choosing an exposure can leave one part of the scene short of detail. The Formatt Hitech FC ND 95mm Graduated ND 0.9 Filter is made for that difference: its graduated neutral-density effect reduces light across part of the frame rather than darkening the whole image. ND 0.9 corresponds to three stops, giving you a defined amount of reduction to work with at the brighter part of the scene. It suits landscape photographers dealing with a visible horizon, from open countryside to a coastline, and is most useful when the sky and land need to sit closer together in exposure. The 95mm size is an important practical detail when matching it to your existing filter arrangement. It won’t change the light in every part of a complicated scene equally, but for a clear horizon it gives you a direct way to manage that bright-to-dark balance.
Specialist Note
A sky that’s several stops brighter than the land can force an awkward choice: keep the sky, or let the foreground fall too dark. This filter’s graduated ND treatment lets you place the reduction over the brighter area, and its 0.9 strength cuts that area by three stops. I’d use it for an open-field or coastal view, aligning the transition with the horizon and setting exposure with the foreground in mind. The 95mm size means you’ll want it to match your filter arrangement. One limit to keep in mind: trees or buildings crossing the horizon can also fall under the darker part, so this works best where the skyline is fairly clean.
