Formatt Hitech Firecrest Bloom Gold 1/8 82mm (Black Ring)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Bloom Gold 1/8 82mm (Black Ring) | A gentle golden bloom for highlights
Without a filter, you’re relying on the scene’s existing colour and contrast to give highlights their character. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Bloom Gold 1/8 is a creative filter for photographers who want a warm, softened look in camera rather than adding that treatment later. Its name points to the combination: a gold tone with a bloom effect, at a restrained 1/8 strength. That makes it a considered option for portraits, warm-lit interiors and other scenes where you want bright areas to feel gentler without making the filter the whole story. The 82mm size is relevant when choosing it for a lens: the lens needs a matching 82mm filter thread. This is a specialist effect filter, rather than a neutral protective layer, so choose it for the look you want in the image. If you prefer clean, unaltered highlights, it may not suit your style.
What to expect
- Gold bloom: A warm, softened highlight character is the look suggested by this filter’s name.
- 1/8 strength: A restrained strength to consider when you want the effect to remain subtle.
- Black ring: The ring is black, as specified in the product name.
Choosing it for a shoot
Think about the light in your frame before reaching for a bloom filter. Bright points and reflective areas give this kind of effect something to work with; a scene without prominent highlights may show less of its character. The gold designation also makes it a better fit for scenes where warmth belongs than for work where colour needs to stay neutral. It’s a deliberate image-making choice, not an all-purpose filter.
Specialist Note
“Will the 1/8 version make everything look heavily filtered?” Not by design: I’d treat that marking as the restrained end of this filter’s effect, useful when you want a gentle golden bloom rather than an overt look. The 82mm size is the practical detail to match to your lens’s filter thread; it won’t fit every lens just because the filter itself is 82mm. I’d consider it for a warm portrait or a night scene with bright points of light, where those highlights can carry the bloom. If accurate, neutral colour is the priority, I’d leave this one off and choose a different look.
