Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 105mm ND 1.8 (6stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 105mm ND 1.8 (6stops) Filter | Six stops for longer exposures
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 105mm ND 1.8 (6stops) Filter reduces the light reaching your camera by six stops. It’s for photographers working with a 105mm filter setup who want to use a slower shutter speed without changing the scene’s lighting. That makes it useful for smoothing moving water, showing cloud movement, or making a busy daytime scene feel quieter. The six-stop reduction gives you a clear exposure change to plan around: at the same aperture and ISO, a shutter speed of 1/60 sec becomes roughly one second. This is a specialist-sized filter for photographers who already work with 105mm filters, rather than a small everyday filter to keep on every lens. If your aim is a longer exposure in daylight, it gives you a practical amount of light reduction to work with.
Putting six stops to work
Choose your aperture and ISO for the look you want, then meter the scene before fitting the filter. Use the six-stop difference to estimate the slower shutter speed; for example, 1/60 sec becomes about one second. That can soften the movement of water while leaving stationary details more defined. The same exposure shift can help record moving clouds over a landscape. Because this is a six-stop filter, it gives a set reduction rather than a range to adjust.
Specialist Note
A fountain is running in the last light of the afternoon, and a one-second exposure turns its splashes into a soft flow. That’s where this Firecrest’s six-stop reduction earns its place: if your unfiltered reading is 1/60 sec, keep the aperture and ISO the same and expose for about one second. The 105mm size suits photographers whose filter setup is built around that format, so it’s worth thinking of it as a deliberate part of a larger filter kit. I’d suggest it to landscape photographers and anyone shaping motion in a bright scene. One limitation is that six stops is a fixed amount; it won’t let you dial in a lighter reduction.
